Whether an individual or a team, with Acción Médica Cristiana´s Volunteer and Team Program will you have the opportunity to stretch your global way of thinking, and gain valuable experience by observing and participating in community health development programs in remote parts of Nicaragua. Individuals:
Each year, AMC welcomes 4-6 open-minded individuals from North America and Europe, and other Latin American countries, who are seeking to enhance their understanding of global wellness in the context of Nicaragua. AMC provides the opportunity to integrate interested individuals into it’s 27-year history of commitment to solidarity work with the most marginalized people of Nicaragua.
Whether your interests are clean water and sanitation, sustainable agriculture, HIV and AIDS, or other global health strategy, AMC can provide an opportunity to share in the positive impact that is being made on the lives of thousands of Nicaraguans in partnership with local communities. AMC's faith perspective is the foundation on which community participation and empowerment is carried out.
Individuals participating in the program have:
• Worked on AMC´s sustainable farms
• Learned about the Nicaraguan health care system
• Participated in health education activities
• Learned about the importance of community participation in development
• Accompanied youth in advocacy work and non-violence promotion
• Learned about disaster prevention and response in Nicaragua
• Carried out short research projects
• Helped to document AMC’s work for promotional materials
Your participation will depend on your interests and current activities at AMC.
Qualification criteria:
In order to qualify for application for an experiential learning opportunity with AMC you must:
• Have an interest in and/or be studying a field related to community health and development
• Have an intermediate or preferably advance level in Spanish.
• Be self-financed for all in-country expenses such as lodging, meals, transportation and language study.
• Identify with a Christian organization and its values. (Note: AMC accepts participants of any faith or non-professed and is not a proselytizing organization).
• Apply by March 1, 2011 for the June/July/August, 2011 period.
AMC works with each volunteer to develop a program, including a full orientation and evaluation, in-country logistical coordination and volunteer profile in an AMC project, as well as calculate the necessary budget for your stay with AMC.
Teams:
Each year AMC hosts 5 - 6 health teams that make a contribution to the long-term work of the organization by donating volunteer medical and dental care, training and health education and/or construction. Teams receive a full orientation in AMC’s Managua-based Central Office, then travel to an AMC Project Site. All logistical arrangements are made by AMC and local partner organizations. Teams come from North American and European churches, non-profits and universities, may stay from one to two weeks, and must cover their international and in-country expenses. Teams should be 6 people minimum and 15 people maximum.
AMC works with each team to develop objectives, a program, (including a full orientation, evaluation and specific activities in an AMC project), all in-country logistical coordination as well as calculate the necessary budget for your team’s visit.

AMC's national volunteers are often students or young graduates in health and development professions who gain valuable experience and learn about their own country and foster their commiment to service. Pharmacy students, agronomy engineers and dentists offer one to two months of volunteer work throughout the year. AMC Projects cover the logistical costs for these volunteers, Donations are welcome to enable this component of AMC's volunteer program. Please visit the donate page.
